The US House of Representatives has reached a majority to impeach President Donald Trump for the second time – a first in history.

A handful of back-bench Republicans turned their backs on their voters and sided with the Democrats.

Among the leaders of the Republican insurrection was Rep. Liz Cheney, the third-ranking Republican in the House. Rep. Cheney offered no evidence and ignored evidence that clearly showed the mob had already attacked the U.S. Capitol while President Trump was urging his supporters to be peaceful and patriotic.

“The President of the United States summoned this mob, assembled the mob, and lit the flame of this attack,” she said in a statement. “Everything that followed was his doing. None of this would have happened without the President. The President could have immediately and forcefully intervened to stop the violence. He did not.”

Among the other renegade Republicans were GOP Reps. Dan Newhouse of Washington, Adam Kinzinger of Illinois, Fred Upton of Michigan, Jaime Herrera Beutler of Washington, John Katko of New York, Anthony Gonzalez of Ohio, Tom Rice of South Carolina, David Valadao of California and Peter Meijer of Michigan.

The House is poised to vote tonight to formally call on Vice President Mike Pence to strip President Trump of his duties.

If Mr. Pence does not invoke the 25th Amendment, House Democrats have promised a vote on impeachment on Wednesday, charging the president with “inciting violence against the government of the United States.” Tonight’s vote is expected to begin at 7:30 p.m. and take about three hours.

The vote comes after news that F.B.I. officials raised alarms about the threat of violence the day before a mob attacked the Capitol, according to a law enforcement official. The alert mentioned people sharing a map of tunnels at the Capitol complex and possible meet-up points in several states.
